Rope Bondage at Karada House

At Karada House we teach Japanese inspired rope bondage (Shibari). Our approach does not follow specific styles or schools of rope bondage but rather works undogmatically from a point of view of teaching fundamental principles.

Who did we learn from?

We have learned rope from a myriad of different teachers and practitioners e.g. Nawashi Kanna, Gestalta, Barkas & Addie, Gorgone, Nicolas Yoroi, Midori etc.

Why principles and not specific styles?

We believe that everybody needs to find their own way, style and intention within the practice. That is why we choose principles, as they allow for adaptation of ideas, intentions, bodies and abilities.

What are the principles we teach?

We love to teach fundamental principles that are based on grounded techniques, adaptive patterns, understanding of bodies, anatomy and health & safety. Our main interest in teaching and researching lies in finding the intentions for tying, in finding flow, connection and a common language for the people practicing rope together. We are equally interested in floor work as well as suspension work.

How do you teach these principles?

Our class system tries to offer you possibilities to choose your own way of learning all of these fundamental principles. We start with our 8-class-series FUNDAMENTALS.

If you are completely new to rope, you start with the BASICS. After this class you can choose how to proceed from there until you reach our two Patterns classes. The Fundamentals classes are designed for you to repeat as long as you need or wish to do so.

How to continue after the fundamentals?

After participants have a solid grounding from these fundamentals classes we offer monthly intensive classes that go into more details and depth. We also invite you to come to our Shibari Research Lab. The lab is a monthly meeting of people who would like to keep studying rope, together, choose ideas and topics to try out and learn in a supervised environment. We also occasionally invite external rope facilitators to join us and teach from their passion perspective.

If you wish to go even further, we recommend booking private teachings with us.

We also regularly offer workshops with rope teachers worldwide in-house and online. Just check our event calendar for more infos.

Need ropes?

We sell jute rope from two different manufacturers. One from Germany and the other from Japan. Both of them are fully suitable for Japanese inspired rope bondage and treated for comfortable and immediate usage. Jute is a natural fibre that needs some care over time for a long lasting usage. If you are not sure about how to do this, please ask us at one of our workshops.

Please use the contact form to order your ropes.

Jute Rope – Organic

These ropes are natural jute purchased from a German rope manufacturer, who does not use machine oils (JBO). The ropes are perfect for beginners as they are robust and require less maintenance. Broken, singed and processed with a citrus oil (lemon or orange), along with tea tree and lavender essential oils, finished with easy to handle overhand knots. These ropes are vegan with paid attention to eco-friendliness.

Jute Rope – Ogawa

Ogawa is a very soft single-ply rope. It is used and loved by many Japanese riggers like Nawashi Kanna, Hajime Kinoko and Naka Akira. We import it directly from Japan. For the processing we remove the machine oil (JBO) first from the rope, then rub and burn them and treat them with a mixture of organic jojoba oil and sandalwood essential oil. The ends are finished with very compact “untwisted” overhand knots.
