Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of bondage do you teach?
We teach Japanese-inspired rope, also called shibari or kinbaku. We adhere to no specific style. We love to teach fundamental principles that are based on grounded techniques, adaptive patterns, understanding of bodies, anatomy, and health & safety. Our main interest in teaching and researching lies in finding the intentions for tying, in finding flow, connection, and a common language for the people practicing rope together.
Do I need to bring a partner?
No! You’re welcome to come alone – many people do. You can pair up with other solo participants or practice on yourself. Partners are always welcome too, of course.
Do I need to bring my own ropes?
No, we have ropes available at the studio. You can also buy ropes from us – we recommend the jute ropes from OhYesPlease (made by our own Renée!).
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing that’s easy to move in. Avoid belts, underwire bras, and large jewelry.
How many times should I take this class?
If you practice a bit at home, you’re fine to move on to Rope School. If this is hard for you to do, we recommend taking the beginner class 2-3 times before moving to Rope School. This helps you build solid foundational skills.
