The holiday season can be a particularly interesting time to think about boundaries. December often brings increased social expectations and obligations—all of which can stretch, blur, or challenge the boundaries we usually rely on.
Boundaries can feel like a slippery concept: something we’re constantly told to uphold, understand, and recognise when crossed. Yet many of us have never had the opportunity to explore what a boundary actually means to us, where our boundaries come from, or how they have been shaped by our experiences.
How did you come to understand boundaries in your life? What have your culture, family, community, relationships, laws, and personal experiences taught you about saying yes, saying no, asking for what you need, and responding when someone else says no?
Caritia invites participants into a practical and reflective space to explore boundaries and negotiation through a holiday-season lens. Together, we’ll look at the difference between boundaries, preferences, needs, limits, and agreements, and how we can communicate them with greater clarity and confidence.
Rather than treating boundaries as fixed rules, we’ll explore them as something we can notice, communicate, negotiate, and revisit as our circumstances and capacity change.
What we will offer
- Exploring our boundary stories — Reflecting on how we learned what boundaries are and what has shaped our understanding of them
- Boundaries, limits & preferences — Unpacking the differences and why they matter when we negotiate
- The holiday pressure cooker — Exploring festive situations where boundaries can become complicated or harder to communicate
- Negotiation in practice — Finding language for making requests, expressing limits, checking in, and responding to changing needs
- Capacity & context — Considering how energy, stress, relationships, and social expectations affect what we are able and willing to do
- When boundaries change — Practising how to communicate when our capacity, desires, or boundaries shift
- Repair & renegotiation — Exploring what we can do when communication goes wrong, expectations change, or a boundary is crossed
- Creating our own festive toolkit — Leaving with practical ideas and language to support clearer, more intentional negotiations throughout the season
An opportunity to move beyond the idea that boundaries are simply about saying no, and explore how they can help us create more satisfying, respectful, connected, and consensual experiences.

More Information
LGBTQIA+ describes the full spectrum of non-mainstream sexual orientation and/or gender identity, meaning: lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, transgender, non-binary, genderqueer/fluid, queer, intersex, asexual, aromantic, agender.
Friends describe people of any and all kinds of gender and sexual identities who are aware and respectful of the necessity, needs, and boundaries of a queer space and its marginalized community.
When you consider yourself a friend you show acknowledgement to and are respectful of everyone's self-expression and do not assume, presume or project non-consensual ideas onto others. You actively request and use people's chosen pronouns. You remain mindful of the fact that Karada House is first and foremost a space for queer people that you are also invited to attend. You have a genuine concern for the well-being of LGBTQIA+ people and remain in awareness of heterosexual and gender-straight privileges.
Friends don't have to be perfect. None of us are. We request that we all proactively work and strive to be good friends and allies to marginalized people.
