Frequently Asked Questions
What Kind of Rope do you teach?
We teach Japanese-inspired rope, also called shibari or kinbaku. We adhere to no specific style. We love to teach fundamental principles that are based on grounded techniques, adaptive patterns, understanding of bodies, anatomy, and health & safety. Our main interest in teaching and researching lies in finding the intentions for tying, in finding flow, connection, and a common language for the people practicing rope together. We are equally interested in floor work as well as suspension work.
Where can I buy ropes?
We recommend buying your shibari ropes at the OhYesPlease Shop – the ropes are actually made by our own Renée, support your local trans fem artist! They have two kinds of jute rope: Japanese jute rope, and organic Spanish jute rope. Jute ropes are lightweight, facilitating fluid movements during tying, and are most comfortable to tie with when they are pre-treated.
Do I need to bring a partner?
No! You’re welcome to come alone – many people do. You can pair up with other solo participants or practice on yourself. Partners are always welcome too, of course.
Not sure where to start?
If you’re completely new to rope, start with our Beginner Classes every Monday. Already know the basics? Check out Rope School for our full curriculum.
