Event Details

In recent decades, neoliberalist ideas have strongly influenced many aspects of our lives. We are witnessing a “commodification of everything” (David Harvey), combined with individualistic notions of freedom and choice, which disguise different power structures and modes of exclusion.

Often, sexualities are understood as something private, detached from such economic questions – but they are not. Yet, the relations between sexualities and neoliberal capitalism are complex and sometimes ambiguous.

This workshop is an invitation to reflect on these relations and discuss the intersections of sex and neoliberalism along with the following and other questions:

What happens to sex and sexualities in a society that urges us to consume, compete and continuously improve ourselves? What does sexual freedom (not) mean in this context? And how can we as individuals and communities react to and/or counteract the growing neoliberalisation of our sexual lives?

This event is part of the “About: Sexual Identities” Conference and can be purchased as a single ticket or be part of the day ticket or full conference ticket.
