Shibari:
All About Rope

Rope Workshops & Shibari Events

Experience shibari bondage through a queer lense in our workshops, events, jams, and more. At Karada House, tying and being tied isn’t just about knots (though, yes, we are soooo nerdy about knots and frictions). It’s about connection, communication, creativity, and the kind of learning that happens when you’re held, literally and figuratively.

Whether you’re brand new, elbow deep into geekery, craving structured learning, or just an all-round rope slut, we’ve got room for you in our community. We pride ourself on how we create supportive environments and center the margins, both in how we hold space and in how we teach.

Learn Shibari in Berlin and Online

Getting started with shibari is very easy – just pop into one of our Rope for Absolute Beginners classes – every Monday at 7-10pm. We recommend taking the class a couple of times to get solid foundational skills.

We’ve got you with your whole rope journey – after getting your basics sorted, you can move on to our weekly shibari classes. Our core classes work like a level-up system all the way from foundations to suspensions and creativity.

We designed our rope curriculum like a level-up system. It’s easy to enter, rewarding to master, and always welcoming. The basis of the system is in our weekly beginner classes every Monday, and our core curriculum classes every Tuesday.

1. Rope for Absolute Beginners

This is your starting point to tying shibari. This weekly 3-hour class offers the absolute basics that get you started on your rope journey. Every Monday at 7-10pm.

2. Rope Fundamentals

Your starter pack. You’ll learn the “what” and the “how” of tying: handling your rope, basic knots, simple harnesses, and how rope can connect bodies and moods. We keep it relaxed, safe, and supportive. First Tuesday of the month at 7-9.30pm.

3. Rope Structures

For the nerds who love patterns, architecture, and problem-solving. Dive into harnesses, shapes, and the “how does this even work?” magic of rope. We explore specific harness types, styles, body positions, and different tying styles from across rope traditions. Third Tuesday of the month at 7-9.30pm.

5. Rope in the Air

You’ve got your groundwork sorted. Now we take things up — literally. Learn suspension techniques from easy to challenging in these classes offering content from beginner suspensions to pushing limits. Second Tuesday of the month at 7-9.30pm.

4. Multi-Level Rope Lab

Our monthly research space for every experience level. Come experiment under the guidance of our teachers. The topic is new each month — from shame and semenawa to performance and dancing with rope. We rotate between two themes, Movement & Expression and Play & Connection, always bringing new inspiration to your rope practice. Fourth Tuesday of the month at 7-9.30pm.

One or two day, focused weekend workshops to expand your toolset, whether you want to play more, get into the air, or try something you’ve never done before. With Renée de Sans (she/her)

René emphasizes that understanding shibari involves never losing sight of the person being tied. Even when learning specific patterns and harnesses, she believes it’s crucial to adapt each tie to the individual’s unique body, needs, desires, and abilities.

She also offers private tying experiences in a safe environment for people of all bodies and genders, highlighting that no one needs to meet any standards or norms to enjoy being tied.

FAQ

We teach Japanese-inspired rope, also called shibari or kinbaku. We adhere to no specific style. We love to teach fundamental principles that are based on grounded techniques, adaptive patterns, understanding of bodies, anatomy, and health & safety. Our main interest in teaching and researching lies in finding the intentions for tying, in finding flow, connection, and a common language for the people practicing rope together. We are equally interested in floor work as well as suspension work.

Our in-house teachers Caritia, Ceci, Dasniya, Mamana, and Renée all have their own focus and different styles. All their knowledge has come together to create a nuanced and comprehensive rope curriculum.

We recommend buying your shibari ropes at the OhYesPlease Shop (the ropes are actually made by our own Renée, support your local trans fem artist!). They have two kinds of jute rope – Japanese jute rope, and organic Spanish jute rope. Jute ropes are lightweight, facilitating fluid movements during tying, and are most comfortable to tie with when they are pre-treated.
