The reality is that many of the frameworks people use for consent, the ones meant to keep us ‘safe’ or to mitigate risk in kink/rope sessions, have major gaps or simply don’t work for a lot of people. Whether it’s because of neurospicy brains, the exchange of money for services, exchanging money for services, trauma, or simply the impossibility of remembering someone’s 3 page list of soft/hard limits and boundaries… the truth is most consent and negotiation scripts don’t function in real life. So, what do we actually do instead? Let’s talk about it with some nuance, an roundtable discussion bringing together different personal and professional approaches and perspectives on consent and negotiation, and how we might approach intimacy in play in ways that actually work for the people involved.
