Amaya’s journey of learning Shibari in Costa Rica has been an intense path of personal growth and a confrontation with the country’s social realities. As a fat, pansexual woman, she has faced significant challenges in an environment often shaped by sexism and heteronormativity, where judgmental looks and comments are almost daily occurrences. For her, practicing Shibari has been both a journey of self-acceptance and empowerment and an act of resistance. Despite encountering hostility both online and in person, she has built a community around her that values respect and authenticity. This supportive network has allowed her to grow and explore Shibari on her own terms, grounded in her body and her desires.
