SUMMARY:Kink is Political: Work
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of International Workers’ Day\, our May session will be about the concept of “work.” Pushing against cultural norms within BDSM and kink scenes that have historically been structured to distance BDSM and kink from sex work\, we’ll inquire what it means to understand what we do within the context of work. Along the way\, we’ll discuss sex work\,  professionalization in the rope scene\, and the legacy of Wages for Housework.  \nAbout this series\nKink is Political is an online discussion with Addie Tahl\, Georg Barkas\, Andrea Rimon\, and occasional special guests. Participants are invited to join a discussion during which we unite critique with an emphasis on the practical and day-to-day issues and challenges of kink\, intimacy\, and relationships. \nFocusing on concepts central to BDSM\, leather\, rope\, and sex-positive communities\, it interrogates widely adopted approaches and commonly held notions. It aims to understand the politics of kink beyond the language of sexual liberation and politics of sexual liberalism\, both frames that have proven insufficient in addressing widespread harm\, a rising international tide of sex-negativity and reaction\, or in guaranteeing that the most marginalized can sexually flourish. \nKink is Political is an examination of the contexts and consequences of how we talk about and understand gender and sexuality. It is a forum to think about how kink spaces and practices operate\, what works\, what doesn’t\, and what we can use to build something better.

SUMMARY:Intro to Suspension
DESCRIPTION:The goal of suspension\, in Addie’s understanding\, is not to do the most difficult thing or last the longest or take the most impressive picture\, but to enjoy an adventure\, support a partnership\, stay focused on humans rather than patterns\, and tailor the experience to best suit the individuals involved.\n\nThis two-part class is suitable for people who have never suspended but have a general idea of the principles\, as well as those who have some suspension knowledge and want to consolidate their practice and hone their skills.\n\nPart I: June 8th\, 2026\nPart II: June 15th\, 2026\n(ticket is for the ENTIRE SERIES)\n\nThis class does NOT require a TK/arms-in harness\, all ties can also be done from a chest harness. Addie will offer options to suit a variety of needs\, especially any that are expressed by class participants\, so bring your questions and situations!\n\nBetween the two classes we will cover:\n\n\nDiscussion of safety\, ways to get out of trouble quickly and elegantly.\nBuilding a scene\, interpersonal dynamics\, and thoughts on communicating needs while maintaining those dynamics.\nInformation for those being tied\, including nerve spotting\, testing ties to find ‘hot spots’\, and body mechanics tricks to help manage tension/strain.\nConsiderations when choosing suspension lines and some exercises to improve suspension line handling.\nA progressable partial suspension with option to turn into full suspension – great practice for line management\, body handling\, and keeping focus on the ‘big picture’ and partner interactions.\nSide suspension with options to add mini transitions – build this as complicated or straightforward as you want without making it harder to ‘exit’ smoothly.\n‘Falling with style’ – a highly modifiable partial-to-full suspension progression focusing on lowering rather than lifting through a variety of positions. This is useful for those who want to stay closer to the ground\, for tying folks who have concerns about grip strength\, or in pairings where the person tying is smaller/lighter than the person being tied. This suspension can be done with a variety of upper body ties\, including just a ‘safety’ line.\nTime dependent\, we will also learn a quick and easy suspensionable futomomo.

SUMMARY:Kink is Political: Accountability
DESCRIPTION:In our last session before a short summer break\, we’ll turn towards the concept of “accountability.”  In conversation with Pinko’s published volume After Accountability: A Critical Genealogy of a Concept\, we’ll trace the history and limitations of a value commonly professed by kink educators and organizations. We’ll work to understand the terms widespread popularization and adoption\, theoretical context\, and use within policy and incident response policies within kink and sex positive spaces. We’ll ask: what does it mean to be held accountable? Who is empowered and disempowered by the concept of accountability? Who does the concept disenfranchise\, and what model of human psychology and experience do popular versions of the concept of accountability propose?  \nAbout this series\nKink is Political is an online discussion with Addie Tahl\, Georg Barkas\, Andrea Rimon\, and occasional special guests. Participants are invited to join a discussion during which we unite critique with an emphasis on the practical and day-to-day issues and challenges of kink\, intimacy\, and relationships. \nFocusing on concepts central to BDSM\, leather\, rope\, and sex-positive communities\, it interrogates widely adopted approaches and commonly held notions.
