SUMMARY:Kink is Political: Suffering
DESCRIPTION:This Easter month\, we’ll interrogate the Christian underpinnings of kink and BDSM aesthetics by turning towards the concept of “suffering.” We will read Emannuel Levinas’ essay “Useless Suffering” alongside discussions of seme in Japanese rope bondage. We’ll ask: what are the political implications of connecting beauty\, meaning\, and suffering? What would a tying\, kink\, or BDSM practice look like that takes a starting point that suffering has no intrinsic meaning or value? \nAbout this series\nKink is Political is an online discussion with Addie Tahl\, Georg Barkas\, Andrea Rimon\, and occasional special guests. Participants are invited to join a discussion during which we unite critique with an emphasis on the practical and day-to-day issues and challenges of kink\, intimacy\, and relationships. \nFocusing on concepts central to BDSM\, leather\, rope\, and sex-positive communities\, it interrogates widely adopted approaches and commonly held notions. It aims to understand the politics of kink beyond the language of sexual liberation and politics of sexual liberalism\, both frames that have proven insufficient in addressing widespread harm\, a rising international tide of sex-negativity and reaction\, or in guaranteeing that the most marginalized can sexually flourish. \nKink is Political is an examination of the contexts and consequences of how we talk about and understand gender and sexuality. It is a forum to think about how kink spaces and practices operate\, what works\, what doesn’t\, and what we can use to build something better.

Looking towards both the literary critical and our experiences of the everyday\, we’ll weigh the problems and poetic affordances that ambiguity presents in a culture so deeply concerned about security and liability mitigation.

We’ll ask: how might the concept of welcomeness help us think through the assumptions of a consent standard? How do we deal with cases where asking for consent may in and of itself be an aggression or cause of harm? What are the ways that “welcomeness” falls short\, and provides cover for pervasive sexual harm?  \n\n\n\n\n\n

Drawing on Ariel Ajeno’s essay “After Consent\,” the discussion will historicize the concept\, chart its political limitations\, and gesture towards other practices and political formations that might point the way to a better\, more revolutionary sexual politics. Along the way\, we’ll ask: is consent necessary or sufficient for sex to be non-injurious\, let alone good? What makes consent possible? What political work does consent do? What are the differences between the way consent is understood as a practice and as a standard? What does it mean to think “After Consent?”  \n\n\n\n\n\n

We’ll start from the example of the rope scene and move on to broader kink and sex positive communities. Along\, the way\, we’ll ask: Who does trying attract? What do different kinds of tying pedagogy teach us about ways of being in the world? What are the consequences of participating in practics so built around private space? Is there something authoritarian built into the ways that we gather?

SUMMARY:Addie & Barkas: Experimental Kinbaku
DESCRIPTION:For Addie and Barkas experimental kinbaku means exploring ways of tying with each other that don’t rely on cliches of tradition\, sexuality\, or psychology. \nIn this weekend intensive\, we will develop different approaches to Kinbaku by stepping into a dialogue with other forms of interpersonal interaction. We will implement contexts of intimacy\, communication\, power\, art\, movement\, and politics into our practice of tying and experiment with an arrangement of techniques that allows us to learn more and different things about each other. \nThis workshop is following an “all levels” approach\, which means that we encourage practitioners at any stage of their learning to participate. Switching absolutely welcome but for time reasons\, not every exercise can be done by both. \nTopics we will cover in this intensive workshop\n\nPreparations and introduction\nBasic concepts of experimental systems\nContexts of Kinbaku\nTying with each other rather than tying each other. Communication\nThe personal is political. Tying as a statement beyond the private encounter\nLet’s not forget the joy of tying\n\nNote: Participants of this workshop automatically have free entry our performance evening INTIMATE SESSIONS that includes a session with Addie and Barkas. \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:The Single! The Column! The Tie!
DESCRIPTION:Single column ties are the first structure most people learn\, the starting point to many ties\, the foundation of suspension lines\, one of the most pervasive elements of rope play… yet they are hardly ever the centre of teaching attention. This class approaches single columns from a variety of directions – finger techniques to tie them more efficiently while maintaining balance\, tricks for tying them with gusto and while playing\, tweaks to make them sit or behave in particular ways\, and a plethora of other tips\, tricks\, fun\, and geekery. Back to basics\, with flare!

SUMMARY:Intimate Session: Addie & Barkas
DESCRIPTION:This series allows rope facilitators to show participants how they approach intimate sessions\, away from modes of teaching or performing. Come and witness an improvised intimate moment amongst people who do rope (pretty well). We will blur the lines of the private and the public\, the curated and the improvised. After the session\, there is time for a little chat\, Q&A and/or just sharing thoughts\, dreams and wishes. \nFormat: intimate session

SUMMARY:Technically A Suspension
DESCRIPTION:This is a class in opposition to the often high pressures and demands of suspension\, where the goal is to find ways to leave the ground without adding complication\, physical strain\, or pretentiousness. Perhaps we get off the ground for a moment\, or a cm\, or partly supported on a body/furniture\, or using a pulley\, or making a rope hammock\, or only if the person in ropes flexes to lift off… it totally counts! This class touches on accessibility topics – what are suspension methods that don’t require hand/grip strength? How can we add extra supports for sore bodies\, or suspend without constricting certain areas? Bring questions and queries\, there will be time to lab out special requests! \nWorkshop partner: Barkas

SUMMARY:A Shoulder to Tie On
DESCRIPTION:Arms-behind-the-back positions are common in bondage but many people find them difficult to get into or uncomfortable to maintain for a number of reasons: tight shoulders\, rotator cuff issues\, muscle or fat density\, hypermobility\, spine or shoulder alignment\, blood flow\, etc. This class explores two shoulder-friendly techniques for bringing the arms behind the back\, working with the person’s body ergonomics. \nworkshop partner: Barkas \n  \nFormat: workshop \nMinimum knowledge level: single column tie \nparticipants: as many as fit \nWhat to bring: A rope\, may or may not use it \nConstellations: Everything goes \nAccessibility: Class aims to provide tools\, no need to be able to bring arms together

SUMMARY:Ropes and Sex with Barkas & Addie
DESCRIPTION:  \nBarkas and Addie usually teach with the goal of separating the practice of rope from inherent expectations or assumptions of sexual contact. But that does not mean that they do not practice and enjoy sexual rope as well! \nThis 3-part-workshop-series will focus on rope techniques for sex and ideas on how to sexualize ropes. We will not only look at ways of queering approaches to rope and sex (however you define and practice it) but also engage in a deconstruction of sex\, sexuality\, intimacy\, and eroticism in the context of ropes. \nContent warning: this series is explicit. \n  \nPart I: DECONSTRUCTION\nMay 14th\, 2025\, 7-10 pm CET (Berlin time) \n  \nPart II: ROPE BASICS FOR SEX LIKE EVERYONE IMAGINES SEX\nMay 21st\, 2025\, 7-10 pm CET (Berlin time) \n  \nPart III: QUEERING SEX AND ROPE\nMay 28th\, 2025\, 7-10 pm CET (Berlin time) \n  \n  \nEvent Details \nDate & Time: May 14th & 21st\, & 28th\, 2025\, 7 pm-10 pm CET (Berlin time) \nFormat: workshop (virtual) \nAudience:  LGBTQIA+ & FRIENDS \nLanguage: English \nMinimum Knowledge Level: Single column tie. Basic frictions. \nWhat to Bring:  if you want to tie along you need ropes\, safety gear\, space\, a partner and skills for thorough negotiation \nSolo or Partnered:  both (each participant needs a ticket) \nClass recording: Yes. The recording will be made available after the live class for 14 days \n  \nWho is this event for? \nLGBTQIA+ describes the full spectrum of non-mainstream sexual orientation and/or gender identity\, meaning: lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, pansexual\, transgender\, non-binary\, genderqueer/fluid\, \nFriends describe people of any and all kinds of gender and sexual identities who are aware and respectful of the necessity\, needs\, and boundaries of a queer safe(r) space and its marginalized community. \nWhen you consider yourself a friend you show acknowledgment to and are respectful of everyone’s self-expression and do not assume presume or project non-consensual ideas onto others. You actively request and use people’s chosen pronouns. You remain mindful of the fact that Karada House is first and foremost a space for queer people that you are also invited to attend. You have a genuine concern for the well-being of LGBTQIA+ people and remain in awareness of heterosexual and gender-straight privileges. \nFriends don’t have to be perfect. None of us are. We request that we all proactively work and strive to be good friends and allies to marginalized people. \n  \nAccessibility Note \nThe workshop and discussion are held in spoken English with automated captions in English which are provided by Zoom. SUMMARY:Hishi Harnesses are Forever
DESCRIPTION:Hishis are a diamond pattern that is not only one of the staples of Japanese-inspired rope bondage but also one of the most versatile patterns. Addie will take a long and nerdy look at several hishi-based harnesses\, including a hands-free option. \nThe series will include a full-body hishi harness\, a split line hishi harness\, and the infamous Nambu TK which is great for transitions and can be pulled from multiple points. \nThe details and mechanics of technical suspension are Addie’s specialty and passion. Over the past 6 years\, she has amassed a wide\, varied repertoire of suspension experience\, with a heavy emphasis on tying different people with different preferences and adapting ties to people rather than the other way around. Pre-pandemic\, she taught TheSpace’s Techie Tuesdays\, a weekly series that focused on how and why ties work the way they do\, helping participants to build a working\, functional knowledge of tying for suspension. \n  \nTech Dump Part I: Intro to Hishis and first patterns (April 13th\, 2025\,  7-10 pm CET) \nTech Dump Part II: Diving deeper into more complex patterns & harnesses (April 26th\, 2025\, 7-10 pm CET)  \n  \nEvent Details \nDate & Time:  April 13 & April 26th\, 2025\, 7 pm-10 pm CET \nFormat: workshop (virtual) \nAudience:  LGBTQIA+ & FRIENDS \nLanguage: English \nMinimum Knowledge Level: single column tie\, double column tie & it is highly recommended that participants take the TK-ish Tech Dump before the Suspension Tech Dump(s) to ensure that we are all working from the same starting point. \nThere is no previous suspension experience required to participate\, and each suspension will be shown with levels of difficulty to offer information\, challenge\, and accomplishment for participants with any level of previous experience. Throughout\, there will be tips\, tricks\, and suggestions for those who are tied. There will also be time for tying practice\, and many (though not all) elements can be modified for those who like to self-tie. \nFor those tying: No previous suspension knowledge is necessary\, especially for the early sessions. Those who are new to TK-ish structures are also welcome to participate but should take the TK session first\, and be willing to stick to the more basic versions/variations of ties. For the suspension classes\, a good goal for tying participants is to be able to tie a suspension-worthy upper body tie smoothly\, a non-collapsing single-column tie on the first try\, and to open\, move\, and re-lock a suspension line without fumbling or cussing. \nFor those being tied: I recommend having some previous experience in rope so that those being tied have a frame of reference and can make more informed decisions. This does not have to include suspension experience. Likewise\, there are no pre-requisites for flexibility\, fitness\, lack of injuries\, etc; one of the goals of the series is to tie for the differences in how individuals work\, to use that individuality to the best advantage. In Addie’s experience\, the pairs who have the most success in workshops are generally those who can laugh together and who approach challenges as a team. \nIf you have any questions about those guidelines\, please contact Addie (addietahl@gmail.com). \nWhat to Bring: ropes (the techniques covered work well for natural fiber rope\, and synthetic will behave differently. This series is not suited to tying with synthetic rope)\, a partner\, suspension point if you want to tie along \nSolo or Partnered:  both (each participant needs a ticket) \nClass recording: Yes. The recording will be made available after the live class for 14 days. \n  \nAccessibility Note \nThe workshop and discussion are held in spoken English with automated captions in English which are provided by Zoom. Communication within the class can be had via chat but also people can come on mic and speak. If you participate in this workshop and need more assistance\, i.e. someone reading out the chat\, etc\, please message us at info@karada-house.de beforehand. \n  \nWho is this event for? \nLGBTQIA+ describes the full spectrum of non-mainstream sexual orientation and/or gender identity\, meaning: lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, pansexual\, transgender\, non-binary\, genderqueer/fluid\, queer\, intersex\, asexual\, aromantic\, agender. \nFriends describes people of any and all kinds of gender and sexual identities who are aware and respectful of the necessity\, needs\, and boundaries of a queer safe(r) space and its marginalized community. \nWhen you consider yourself a friend you show acknowledgement to and are respectful of everyone’s self-expression and do not assume\, presume or project non-consensual ideas onto others. SUMMARY:Spatial Awareness for Kinbaku
DESCRIPTION:Rope Bondage exists in space and time. We need to necessarily tie somewhere but this somewhere is not obvious. Every point in space implies a time\, a situation\, as well as an orientation\, which\, in turn implies a direction. \nIn this workshop series we will look at the different spatial and temporal aspects of tying. The questions arising are not as philosophical as they seem. \nThis is a hands-on workshop series with plenty of down-to-earth tips and tricks for tying. We explore what it can mean to tie on the floor\, to tie standing up\, to suspend. We will move around in space and we will see how the session changes when we pick a different direction of the tie. We also check out the advantages of a heightened spatial (and temporal) awareness for technical aspects of rope bondage. All three parts include tips and tricks for rope handling and technique. \n  \nPart 1 (March 6th\, 2025\, 7-10pm CET) \nSpace and Time as a question for the practice of rope bondage. \nMovement and stillness as intentions. \nPart 2 (March 13th\, 2025\, 7-10pm CET) \nThe main situations of rope bondage: sitting\, standing\, flying. \nPart 3 (March 20th\, 2025\, 7-10pm CET) \nTowards a better tying session. Picking the space and the time\, and the reason for tying. \n  \n  \nEvent Details \nDate & Time: March 6th\, 13th\, 20th\, 2025\,  7-10 pm CET (Berlin time) \nFormat: workshop & discussion (virtual) \nAudience:  LGBTQIA+ & FRIENDS \nLanguage: English \nMinimum Knowledge Level: Single column tie and curiosity. \nWhat to Bring:  ropes\, a partner if you want to tie along \nSolo or Partnered:  all constellations are welcome (each participant needs a ticket) \nClass recording: Yes. For the entire series\, please purchase the series ticket all the way at the end of this page. \n  \nClass 1: Side Suspension Transitions (February 3rd\, 2025\, 6-8.30pm CET)\nSide suspension with multiple options for progression including tying a mid-air futomomo tie or lowering on the tying person’s shoulders. Lots of bells and whistles! \nClass 2: Running Person Transitions (February 11th\, 2025\, 6-8.30pm CET)\nRunning person and transitions\, including to face down or face up\, torsions\, and rotation to side. Special attention to balancing a tie for upright suspension\, and the body mechanics of keeping that shape. \nClass 3: Face Down Transitions (March 3rd\, 2025\, 6-8.30pm CET)\nFace down to inversion\, inversion to face up or face up\, and variations on this theme. We will set some ground rules and risk mitigation for experimentation\, as well as ways to avoid repetition and generate spontaneity (yay games!). We will also cover tricks for maintaining longevity in the air (offloading and circulation fixes!) and how to collaborate even when no one\nknows what’s coming next. Special note! This is an advanced suspension class and cannot be taken separately. Participants must have taken classes 1-3 and be able to handle that material\ncompetently. \n  \nEvent Details \nDate & Time:  February 3rd & 11th\, March 3rd & 17th\, 2005\, 6 pm-8.30 pm CET (Berlin time) \nFormat: workshop (virtual) \nAudience:  LGBTQIA+ & FRIENDS \nLanguage: English \nMinimum Knowledge Level: Class 1-3: intermediate to advanced suspension skills. You should be able to tie basicstatic suspensions and be exploring transitions. Your uplines should be quick\, smooth\, and safe\, and should be able to tweak things to suit the person in ropes. The dynamic between the tying pair should be collaborative and supportive with a sense of humour\nand adventure. Class 4: advanced suspension skills. The materials from classes 1-3 should be comfortable for you\, not at the limit of your skillset\, and participants must have taken the other three classes. All suspensions can be done from hands front or back harnesses\, and potentially chest harnesses if they are solid and can take the strain of multiple transitions. There is no\nrequirement for flexibility or longevity in the air. \nWhat to Bring:  ropes and a partner\, if you want to tie along \nSolo or Partnered:  all constellations welcome (each participant needs a ticket) \nClass recording: Yes. The recording will be made available after the last live class for 14 days after the end of the entire series (so there is time!) \n  \nAccessibility Note \nThe workshop and discussion are held in spoken English with automated captions in English which are provided by Zoom. SUMMARY:Robust as Fuck: The Nambu TK
DESCRIPTION:A robust\, resilient\, and versatile variation on a TK-type tie designed to load from front\, side\, or back\, and to sustain multiple transitions while keeping shape. This class will go into technical detail about building the structure including how to shift tensions away from some areas while applying the tie. We will also look at suspending and transitioning with it\, and tips and tricks for working with upper body ties in general. The class has a technical focus\, but will also look at techniques to move\, maneuver\, and engage your partner while tying. \nThe class will not have specific breaks to practice\, but material will be shown such that participants can tie along in segments. \n  \nEvent Details \nDate & Time:  November 18th\, 2024\, 7 pm – 10 pm CET \nFormat: hands-on workshop & demonstration \nMinimum Knowledge Level: You should be able to tie a suspensionable TK-type upper body tie on the first try without major structural flaws. This harness positions the hands behind the back\, and while it can be adapted to a body harness (to be briefly discussed in class) the focus of the class is on the ‘original’ version with hands behind the back. \nWhat to Bring: yourself\, ropes\, safety tools \nSolo or Partnered: any constellation\, works \nClass recording: Yes. SUMMARY:Magic Tricks for Excellent Rope Handling
DESCRIPTION:This class takes a deep dive into the minute details of what makes good tension\, clean placement\, even lines\, and smooth\, effortless rope movement. \nThese absolutely fundamental (and universally applicable) micro-techniques are difficult to pin down but magic once implemented\, and make the difference between good rope and excellent tying. We will look at how to use hands more effectively\, going into details like which fingers hold tension when\, how to flip or angle rope to prevent twists\, which angles to follow when throwing rope to clear it\, how to multi-task so that one hand can accomplish two (or three) tasks simultaneously. \nWe will break down how the person tying can maneuver their hands and body to tie even cuffs (thigh\, ankle) that stay in place\, or how to tweak those cuffs better suit the needs of a tie. We will also look at techniques to prevent finger and hand injuries for those who tie. These techniques are useful to anyone who ties\, no matter their style\, and all skill levels will find these techniques useful and productive. \nBeginners are especially invited to attend as it is easier to build good habits from the beginning. Solo attendance is also encouraged\, and techniques will be taught in such a way that they can be practiced on oneself. \n  \nEvent Details \nDate & Time:  September 30th\, 2024\, 7 pm – 10 pm CET \nFormat: discussion & demonstration \nMinimum Knowledge Level: A single-column tie \nWhat to Bring: yourself\, ropes\, safety tools \nSolo or Partnered: any constellation\, works \nClass recording: yes \nThis class will be recorded (only the facilitator\, not the participants) and is available for ticket holders for 14 days after the event. \n  \nAccessibility Note \nThe workshop and discussion are held in spoken English with automated captions in English which are provided by Zoom. SUMMARY:Technically A Suspension
DESCRIPTION:  \nThere are a whole bunch of options for technically performing suspensions\, as in they get the person off the ground\, but maybe only for a moment\, or only a centimeter\, or partly supported on a body/furniture\, or using a pulley\, or making a rope hammock\, or only if the person in ropes flexes to lift off. \nThis is a class in opposition to the often high demands of suspension\, where the goal is to find ways to have the person in ropes not touch the ground without having to get too complicated\, strenuous\, physically demanding\, or pretentious about it. \nThis class also touches on accessibility – what are some ways of making a suspension that doesn’t require hand strength to hold and lock suspension lines? What about ways of adding extra supports for sore bodies\, or suspending without constricting certain areas? Bring questions and queries\, there will be space to lab special requests! \n  \nEvent Details \nDate & Time:  August 14th\, 2024\, 7 pm-10 pm CET (Berlin time) \nFormat: workshop (virtual) \nAudience:  LGBTQIA+ & FRIENDS \nLanguage: English \nMinimum Knowledge Level: an understanding of up-lines\, an understanding of what makes basic suspensionable body attachments (chest harness\, loops\, leg binder\, whatever)\, and a sense of humor and adventure \nWhat to Bring:  ropes\, if you want to tie along \nSolo or Partnered:  all constellations welcome (each participant needs a ticket) \nClass recording: Yes. The recording will be made available after the last live class for 14 days. \n  \nAccessibility Note \nThe workshop and discussion are held in spoken English with automated captions in English which are provided by Zoom.
\n  \nPart I: DECONSTRUCTION\nJune 19th\, 2024\, 7-10 pm CET (Berlin time) \n  \nPart II: ROPE BASICS FOR SEX LIKE EVERYONE IMAGINES SEX\nJune 26th\, 2024\, 7-10 pm CET (Berlin time) \n  \nPart III: QUEERING SEX AND ROPE\nJuly 3rd\, 2024\, 7-10 pm CET (Berlin time) \n  \n  \nEvent Details \nDate & Time: June 19th & 26th\, July 3rd\, 2024\, 7 pm-10 pm CET (Berlin time) \nFormat: workshop (virtual) \nAudience:  LGBTQIA+ & FRIENDS \nLanguage: English \nMinimum Knowledge Level: Single column tie.
