SUMMARY:Self-Tying for Integration
DESCRIPTION:  \nIt’s almost over. So much has happened and your brain must be buzzing at this point. How to integrate all the information\, all the emotions\, the new friends\, the wild stuff and experiences? Sophia Rose will help you by guiding you in a slow self-tying session to calm down\, relax and allow for things to settle and fall in place. Enjoy this space as a conscious moment in time that gives you a ritual to end Queerope Berlin 2024 slowly but surely. \n  \nFormat: session \nMinimum knowledge level: single-column tie \nparticipants: as many as fit \nWhat to bring: 2-5 ropes \nConstellations: solo \nAccessibility: we will be on the floor but adjustments/adaptations are possible \n

SUMMARY:Second law of thermodynamics
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis workshop is all about embracing entropy\, aka chaos\, in your tying. We will figure out the essential structures\, only to take them apart and break the rules. The goal is to find new kinds of creativity in tying (with the risk of failing spectacularly). Ceci will guide you through the process with clear drills that give your chaos a framework. You can take your creations up in the air or keep them firmly on the ground. \nPartner: Emory \n  \nFormat: research lab \nMinimum knowledge level: You have experience in tying and being tied in structured harnesses and know how to assess for risks in ropes. If you plan to suspend\, you need to be fluent with your suspension lines – they should flow out of your hands without thinking. If you plan to be suspended\, you need to be able to handle your body in a way that keeps you safe (enough). \nMaximum amount of participants: as many as fit \nWhat to bring: At least 10 ropes (depending on what your body needs)\, safety equipment \nConstellations: all constellations welcome \nAccessibility: any accessibility needs can be incorporated into the chaos

SUMMARY:Rope is Political: Bound Together: The Politics of Rope and LGBTQ+ Liberation
DESCRIPTION:  \nRope is Political is a series of discussions held during the Queerope Berlin 2024 conference.  \n“As a Shibari artist and political activist from Thailand\, I view rope bondage not just as an art form or bondage but as a powerful tool for education\, empowerment\, and liberation. \nIn a society where rigid cultural norms often silence marginalized voices\, particularly those of women and LGBTQ+ individuals\, I use rope to educate\, challenge\, and transform.\nIn Thai culture\, where traditional roles are deeply entrenched\, LGBTQ+ individuals often face significant challenges in asserting their identities. Despite progress in some areas\, true understanding and acceptance of LGBTQ+ identities remain limited. Education plays a crucial role in breaking down these barriers\, and rope bondage can be a part of that educational journey. \nBy engaging in shibari\, we educate ourselves and others about the complexities of identity\, consent\, and the power dynamics that permeate our lives. Rope bondage offers a unique educational experience\, one that transcends conventional learning. It teaches us about the importance of trust\, communication\, and vulnerability. In a world that often prioritizes strength and stoicism\, shibari encourages us to explore the power in vulnerability\, to understand our own boundaries and those of others\, and to learn the art of non-verbal communication. These lessons are particularly valuable for the LGBTQ+ community\, where the journey to self-acceptance and mutual understanding can be fraught with challenges. \nEconomically\, LGBTQ+ individuals in Thailand\, especially those from marginalized backgrounds\, often face additional hurdles\, including job discrimination and lack of access to quality education. By incorporating rope bondage into educational and activist spaces\, we can create opportunities for LGBTQ+ individuals to learn about themselves and their communities in ways that are empowering and transformative. This form of education is not limited to formal settings; it happens in workshops\, community gatherings\, and intimate spaces where we can explore our identities and connect with others who share our experiences. \nIn my work as an educator and activist\, I use Shibari to foster dialogue and understanding. I believe that through education\, we can challenge the cultural and economic structures that oppress us. By teaching and practicing rope bondage\, we create spaces where LGBTQ+ individuals can explore their identities\, express their desires\, and reclaim their autonomy. These spaces are vital for building resilience and solidarity within our communities. \nRope is political because it intersects with education\, empowerment\, and the fight for equality. For the LGBTQ+ community\, Shibari offers a way to educate ourselves and others about the realities of our lives\, to resist the forces that seek to define and confine us\, and to imagine new possibilities for our future. \nThrough rope\, we learn that our bodies\, our identities\, and our stories are our own to tell\, and that in sharing them\, we can create a world where everyone is free to live their truth.” \n  \n-Yada \n  \nFormat: discussion \nMinimum knowledge level: – \nparticipants: as many as fit \nWhat to bring: pen & paper \nConstellations: all constellations welcome \nAccessibility: we’ll be sitting on the floor\, adaptations can be made \n

DESCRIPTION:  \nWild Cards are open slots that can be filled by participants and facilitators of Queerope alike.  \n  \nThis workshop is aimed at those who are looking to be more creative in their floor work and are bored of symmetry and patterns. Learn to collaborate with your rope partner to seek out new shapes and sensations in floorwork. In this floor based workshop we will use various exercises to explore connective movement\, bottom led tying and the capacity for twisting\, contorting and compacting the people we tie. The workshop will be a blend of instruction\, practical demos\, tying and practice so everyone gets a chance to understand and apply these principles and exercises. \nPresenter: Genks \nModel: Kate \n  \nFormat: hands-on workshop \nMinimum knowledge level: \nPeople tying: must be confident in tying single column ties\, munter hitches\, half hitches and a variety of lock offs. This is a floor based workshop\, if tying seated on the floor is not accessible to you\, please notify the organisers so that alternative seating can be provided. Pre negotiation with your tying partner of limits and needs is expected. \nPeople being tied: must have knowledge of the difference between nerve impingement and circulation loss and be able to communicate this clearly. This is a floor based workshop\, if being tied seated on the floor is not accessible to you\, please notify the organisers so that alternative seating can be provided. Pre negotiation with your tying partner of limits and needs is expected. \nparticipants: as many as fit \nWhat to bring: \n-Rope! We recommend bringing a minimum of 5 x 8m lengths of rope suitable for tying\, as well as some shorter pieces (preferably hemp or jute\, but whatever you’re comfortable with).\n-Safety Cutting Tool (EMT shears\, rescue hook or similar).\n-Pen and paper if desired for note taking.\n-Energy and Enthusiasm! \nConstellations: paired \nAccessibility: – \n

SUMMARY:Fundamentals 4: Feedback\, Iteration\, Performance
DESCRIPTION:  \nFundamentals is a series within the Queerope Berlin 2024 conference that goes back to the basics and way beyond. Andrea Rimon will re-define what the fundamentals of rope are and offer classes suited for beginners as well as anyone who wants to go back to a beginner mindset and/or approach the beginnings again in a completely new way. \nWhat does it mean to think of tying fundamentals outside of just learning frictions\, patterns\, and general BDSM social mores? This class series will be an exploration of what it means to build a queer trying practice that takes less for granted. Drawing on techniques taken from physical theater\, dance\, contact improvisation\, and other movement arts\, we will think deeply about what it means to think of tying not just as a sexual practice\, but as a form of collectively devised experience with ties to art\, politics\, and the rest of life. \nIn this class\, we’ll talk about the value of debriefing after scenes and the pedagogical uses of public performance. We’ll take a look at a few different kinds of debriefing discussions and have an at length discussion of Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process. From there\, participants will have the opportunity to perform and workshop scenes\, iterating along the way. Material workshopped can come from previous Fundamentals sessions\, other material from Queerope\, or something else altogether. \nPartner: Layal \n  \nFormat: workshop\, discussion \nMinimum knowledge level: – \nparticipants: 8 \nWhat to bring: ropes\, pen and paper \nConstellations: all constellations welcome \nAccessibility: classes will have a significant portion of discussion\, so we are switching from being on the floor to occasionally standing \n

SUMMARY:Wild Card: Help! Frustration in Ropes (Tree Ropes / Trampa)
DESCRIPTION:  \nWild Cards are open slots that can be filled by participants and facilitators of Queerope alike.  \nThis Wild Card is for everyone who is looking to make space for frustration in and around rope\, and for maybe finding a new relationship with it. We will use psychology\, clowning and performative tools to generate an exchange around this abstract thing that can sometimes be so difficult to deal with. We will talk about it and connect with it through rope. All constellations\, roles and levels are welcome. \nPresenters: Tree Ropes / Trampa\nFormat: hands-on workshop \nMinimum knowledge level: none \nparticipants: as many as fit \nWhat to bring: ropes\, safety equipment \nConstellations: all constellations welcome \nAccessibility: we will be on the floor but adjustments can be made. \n

SUMMARY:It’s A Trap!
DESCRIPTION:  \nWhen we tie someone up\, we restrict their ability to move\, with more or less intensity depending on the type of shape we’re tying. Our intention here will be to push the concept of immobility in the ropes to its extreme as an experiment.\nWe’ll be building a partial suspension bondage where each added rope will have an impact on blocking the position and the body. Like a trap closing slowly around the bound person who in the end can only move their eyes ! After untying\, we’ll analyze all together the emotions that this kind of bondage will have created to the people tied up and to the riggers. \nPartner: Sixtine \n  \nFormat: hands-on workshop \nMinimum knowledge level: People tying must know how to tie structured harness and tie uplines. People getting tied must be used to floorwork at least. Bänana’s ropes style could be related to semenawa (ropes of torment). You need to be comfortable with this kind of dynamic. It’s important to have already discussed the framework of your practice (desires\, intentions\, limits\, ways of managing consent). \nMaximum amount of participants: 12 pairs \nWhat to bring: 6-8 ropes\, safety equipment \nConstellations: pairs \nAccessibility: This class is not just about repeating any patterns. It’s more about the mood of the session and communication. So people can feel free to adapt to their need.

SUMMARY:Rope is Political – Opacity
DESCRIPTION:  \nRope is Political is a series of discussions held during the Queerope Berlin 2024 conference.  \nThis session will examine the political pitfalls of valorizing authenticity and viewing sex and kink as innately revealing or tied to “truth telling.” We’ll talk about the political imperative to create and respect opacity in tying. Reveling in artifice over revelation\, in extimacy over intimacy\, this session is a gesture towards the importance of a sexuality no longer driven by forensic desire. \n  \nFormat: discussion \nMinimum knowledge level: – \nparticipants: as many as fit \nWhat to bring: pen & paper \nConstellations: all constellations welcome \nAccessibility: we’ll be sitting on the floor\, adaptations can be made \n

SUMMARY:Fundamentals 3: Devising and Dynamics
\nIn this class\, we’ll take a look at applying a variety of devising techniques to tying. Working from source material (Andrea will bring some images and texts as inspiration\, but participants will be more than free welcome to work from whatever) or focusing on a particular idea\, participants will develop and map out a small scene. We’ll devote significant time tying with qualities and in genres not commonly seen in tying. Andrea will be there to facilitate along the way and provide exercises\, considerations\, and feedback.

SUMMARY:Rope Handling for Communication
DESCRIPTION:  \nRope bondage suffers from an arbitrary separation of tying skills and communication skills. This workshop seeks to break through that border by exploring how they need each other to the point of being indistinguishable. \nPartner: Emmy \n  \nFormat: hands-on workshop \nMinimum knowledge level: single column tie and some basic frictions \nMaximum amount of participants: as many as fit \nWhat to bring: 2-5 ropes\, safety equipment \nConstellations: all constellations welcome \nAccessibility: – \n

SUMMARY:Can You Breathe?
DESCRIPTION:  \nDuring a bondage session\, the breathing of the tied up person is often impacted. A simple chest harness can become real torture when breathing in certain positions.\nThe rope is a perfect tool for breath play. The rigger can play with his or her partner’s breathing on different spots: mouth\, throat\, ribcage\, abdomen… \nAfter we familiarize ourselves with the precautions to be taken\, we’ll experiment with effective ways of obstructing the air column… \nBreath play is a powerful means of communication in ropes. In this course\, we’ll explore the reactions and emotions that breath play can induce on your partner\, so that we can use it appropriately in a rope session. \nPartner: Sixtine \n  \nFormat: hands-on workshop & demo \nMinimum knowledge level: person tying must know how to tie structured harness and tie uplines. Person getting tied must be used to floorwork at least. Bänana’s ropes style could be related to semenawa (ropes of torment). You need to be comfortable with this kind of dynamic. It’s important to have already discussed the framework of your practice (desires\, intentions\, limits\, ways of managing consent) \nMaximum amount of participants: 12 pairs \nWhat to bring: 8-10 ropes\, safety equipment \nConstellations: partnered \nAccessibility: Perhaps if you’re prone to claustrophobia or anxiety linked to lack of air\, you should think carefully before signing up

DESCRIPTION:  \nFundamentals is a series within the Queerope Berlin 2024 conference that goes back to the basics and way beyond. We’ll discuss the value and method of diagramming ties and the value of being able to create repeatable\, iterable choreography\, even for those who have a practice that does not involve tying for performance and where most scenes are improvised. \nPartner: Layal \n  \nFormat: workshop\, discussion \nMinimum knowledge level: – \nparticipants: 8 \nWhat to bring: ropes\, pen and paper \nConstellations: all constellations welcome \nAccessibility: classes will have a significant portion of discussion\, so we are switching from being on the floor to occasionally standing\, this class will focus on a standing pattern that involves the arms and being taken off balance.

SUMMARY:Wild Card: Holding space to hold people (Louise)
DESCRIPTION:  \nWild Cards are open slots that can be filled by participants and facilitators of Queerope alike.  \n  \nHow do you hold space for rope? Whether it’s smaller more private events\, or larger classes or jams\, let’s hold space to discuss the modalities of facilitating for rope. \nThe format of this Wild Card is a collaborative chat between the participants. \nAll perspectives and experiences in holding space are welcome (I don’t actually have any!) so we can find together what makes the spaces and events we actually want to attend; and maybe figure out how to become the facilitators we want to see in the world. \n  \nFormat: discussion \nMinimum knowledge level: – \nparticipants: as many as fit \nWhat to bring: opinions! \nConstellations: all constellations welcome \nAccessibility: we will be sitting on the floor but adjustments can be made \n

SUMMARY:Floor Torments
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis ground-based class will feature constricting bondage\, all of which has in common the progressive search for difficulty for the person being tied.\nIt will leave room for creativity\, so that each pair can find its own interpretation of what torment in ropes can be.\nThis class will also be an opportunity to discuss the subject of letting go for people who are tied up. How does our rigger’s behavior contribute to our ability to surrender to our reactions and emotions? \nPartner: Sixtine \n  \nFormat: hands-on workshop \nMinimum knowledge level: As a minimum\, peopel tying must master a single column tie\, double column tie\, counter tension and X-friction.
