SUMMARY: One Body One Gote – Personalising Gote Shibari
DESCRIPTION:Gote Shibari is one of the most iconic and foundational ties in Japanese rope bondage. In group workshops\, especially for beginner and intermediate students\, it is often taught as a fixed form. This helps students focus on learning essential technical components. \nWhile this approach is valuable for building solid rope techniques\, it often leaves little space for exploring and understanding how to adapt the tie to different people. Personalising the Gote is a nuanced practice that requires experience\, observation and deeper insight\, which is difficult to explore in a typical group setting. \nNaoko believes that no two Gotes are ever the same. Whether you are tying someone for the first time or the hundredth\, every tie should be responsive to the person in front of you – how they feel on that day\, their body\, their energy\, the conversation you are having in rope\, and the space you are sharing. The Gote\, in her view\, is not a “one-size-fits-all” form but an evolving\, living expression of connection. \nIn this workshop\, Naoko will present Gote Shibari as a customisable form through a series of live demonstrations. For each demonstration\, she\nwill tie with a different person who has a distinct physique\, flexibility and personal preferences. Before tying\, Naoko will begin with an open conversation with the person being tied to understand their preferences\, needs and context of the tie. She will then tie the Gote specifically for them\, adjusting elements as needed while talking through the reasons behind her decisions. In some cases\, she may tie more the once to show variations or different approaches. After each demonstration\, Naoko and the person being tied will share a debrief to reflect on their experience. \nThroughout the class\, Naoko will talk through her thought process\, sharing insights into how she balances techniques\, aesthetics and feelings. She will demonstrate using the technical form of Naka style of Gote as the foundation. \nPart I: Masc bodies (Oct. 9th\, 2026)\nPart II: Curvy bodies (Oct. 16th\, 2026)\nPart III: Hyperflexibility (Oct. 30th\, 2026) \nThis class focuses on individuality. Instead of relying on formulas for specific body types\, Naoko encourages a holistic and responsive approach. She avoids placing people into fixed categories like “flexible” or “inflexible” and applying standard techniques based on those labels. Rather\, she invites students to consider the full context of the person they are tying\, including their body\, emotions\, preferences\, and\nthe interaction at that moment. The adults in front of us also bring their entire history and embodied biography with them. The more they are part of a minority\, the more minority stress and often bad experiences\, discrimination and distrust they bring with them. When it comes to sexuality\, we can assume that there is always at least one person in the group who has experienced sexualised violence. Many people have had experiences in their lives that have the potential to cause trauma. None of our various offerings are trauma therapy\, but rather educational offerings. \nAlexander Hahne\, gay trans man\, trainer and speaker for trans-specific topics in the field of sexual health\, sex educator\, somatic counselor\, sexuality focussed bodyworker\, systemic sex therapist\, dancer and pleasure activist. We’ll explore how to apply rope with intention\, how to create structures that fit real bodies\, and how to make your tying smoother\, safer\, and more efficient. \nYou’ll learn counter tensions\, ladder structures\, your first frictions\, and how to wrap with flow and consistency. These building blocks are what allow harnesses to hold their shape. We’ll also cover ergonomics and hand techniques\, like hooking and pulling rope\, so you can tie for longer without soreness or strain. \nWith these tools in place\, we’ll begin tying simple harnesses and\, more importantly\, understanding why they work. You’ll get a clear picture of the core components (anchors\, stems\, wraps\, frictions\, and cinches) and start recognizing the logic behind shibari structures. SUMMARY:Short Bamboo Restraint Systems
DESCRIPTION:Short bamboo rods can transform the structure\, intensity\, and spatial dynamics of grounded rope restraint. Compact and responsive\, they can act as extensions of the hands\, rigid anchors\, levers\, or frameworks through which pressure and movement are\ndirected.\nIn this three-hour intermediate workshop\, Mosaic Cat & Sia will explore ways of combining short bamboo rods with rope to create systems for limb fixation\, leverage\, controlled compression\, breath-aware restraint\, and dynamic positioning—all without using suspension.\n\nRather than treating bamboo as a decorative addition\, the class approaches it as a structural tool. We will examine how its rigidity changes the distribution of tension\, how small adjustments can produce significant changes in posture and sensation\, and how bamboo can create restraint that is compact\, adaptable\, and visually expressive. The focus will be on principles and modular structures that participants can adapt to\n\ndifferent bodies and scenes\, rather than on reproducing a single fixed pattern. \nThe workshop will include demonstrations\, guided practice\, time for experimentation\, and opportunities to ask questions. \n\nWhat We Will Cover\n\n Selecting\, preparing\, and safely handling short bamboo rods\nUnderstanding how rigid materials interact with soft tissue\, joints\, nerves\, and circulation\nHow to secure limbs to bamboo\nCreating compact limb-folding and compression structures\nUsing bamboo to connect or separate different limbs\nApplying leverage to influence posture and restrict movement\nGrounded restraint positions for kneeling\, seated\, curled\, and forward-folded bodies\nBreath-aware compression and the distinction between controlling posture and dangerously restricting breathing\n\nSafety Note\nRigid bamboo can concentrate force more intensely than rope alone. Techniques involving the neck\, chest\, joints\, leverage\, or compression require particular care and continuous communication. Breath-related material in this workshop focuses on awareness\, posture\, pacing\, and\nconsensual modulation of breathing sensations. It is not intended to teach airway obstruction or uncontrolled restriction of breathing.\nParticipants are encouraged to work slowly\, stay within their existing level of experience\, adapt all exercises to the needs of the person being tied\, and stop immediately if there is numbness\, tingling\, loss of function\, unusual pain\, breathing difficulty\, panic\, or other signs of distress.
