DESCRIPTION:Kink is Political is an online discussion with Addie Tahl\, Georg Barkas\, Andrea Rimon\, and occasional special guests. Participants are invited to join a discussion during which we unite critique with an emphasis on the practical and day-to-day issues and challenges of kink\, intimacy\, and relationships. \n\n\n\nFocusing on concepts central to BDSM\, leather\, rope\, and sex-positive communities\, it interrogates widely adopted approaches and commonly held notions. It aims to understand the politics of kink beyond the language of sexual liberation and politics of sexual liberalism\, both frames that have proven insufficient in addressing widespread harm\, a rising international tide of sex-negativity and reaction\, or in guaranteeing that the most marginalized can sexually flourish. \n\n\n\nKink is Political is an examination of the contexts and consequences of how we talk about and understand gender and sexuality. It is a forum to think about how kink spaces and practices operate\, what works\, what doesn’t\, and what we can use to build something better. \n\n\n\nThis month’s topic: Welcomeness\n\n\n\nIn February’s session\, we’ll discuss the concept of “welcomeness” as it appears in sexual harassment law in the United States. We’ll ask: how might the concept of welcomeness help us think through the assumptions of a consent standard? How do we deal with cases where asking for consent may in and of itself be an aggression or cause of harm? Part hangout\, part jamming with other like-minded people who are into rope bondage/shibari/kinbaku. Come and hang out and watch others do ropey stuff or do some yourself.  The queer rope jam is where you can bring your (rope) partner(s) or meet new people who love to tie\, be tied and/or self-tie. It is also a great space to have sessions in a safe(r) environment with people you do not know yet. \nWe welcome all styles\, all bodies\, all knowledge levels. Monogamy and serial monogamy are valid options\, but what about polyamory\, swinging\, pre-arranged trysts\, friends with benefits\, or choosing to be our own life partner? \nWhat We Will Do\nHow do we communicate in our relationships to make whatever structure we choose actually work\, and we’ll look into issues like jealousy vs. envy\, new relationship energy\, and making each of our friends and partners feel like the unique person they are in our lives. \n

We’ll explore mindful\, low-energy approaches to rope including: creating meaningful floor-based scenes that prioritise stillness over movement\, using minimal rope for maximum impact\, low partial suspensions that require less rigger energy and provide supported rest for bottoms\, techniques for finding intensity through presence rather than complexity. \n\nThis isn’t about pushing through exhaustion – it’s about honouring your body’s limits whilst still experiencing the joy of rope. You’ll learn to create rich\, connected experiences that work with depletion rather than against it\, perfect for the end of rope-intensive weekends or managing chronic fatigue in regular practice. Expect gentle pacing\, plenty of rest breaks\, and techniques you can take home for whenever your energy is slim but your desire for rope remains strong.
