SUMMARY:Shame
DESCRIPTION:Everyone knows shame\, even little children.\nShame is\, much like anger\, an emotional state that most of us try to avoid at all costs.\nSome of us love it in play – and use shame and embarrassment consciously for erotic stimulation and role play. \nIt can be both very uncomfortable and very lusty – but it is always obviously palpable. Shame is sumptuous.\nIt protects our innermost core\, our dignity\, and our integrity. \nTo celebrate shame\, to bathe in it\, can be highly erotic. And\, it can be very satisfying to do this to someone who craves it and truly lose yourself in the pleasure of it all. \nIn order to create a trusting atmosphere where tops\, bottoms\, and switches can have an exchange on their own terms there is often the possibility to divide up into smaller groups. Sensitivity around all kinds of differences and positionings on all levels is expected of participants. \n  \nEvent Details \nDate & Time:  October  9th\, 2021\, 11am-6pm \nFormat: workshop \nAudience:  LGBTQIA+ & Womên \nLanguage: English \nMinimum Knowledge Level: N/a \nWhat to Bring: yourself\, curiosity\, comfortable clothes\, snack food\, blanket \nSolo or Partnered:  both work (everybody needs to buy a ticket) \n  \nWhat we will teach/offer you \n– we will examine our own experiences with shame and embarrassment through conversations and body and breath exercises. \n– we focus on negotiation\, safety\, and aftercare. \n– we will experiment with shaming others and allowing ourselves to be shamed \n– we will indulge in play and exercises dealing with humiliation \n– we will look at the intention of humiliation \n– there will be time and space for various scenarios and role-play options that will be suggested and discussed\, and if desired\, can be tried in short play scenarios. Whoever does not wish to participate\, may use this time instead for planning fun humiliation scenarios. \n– feedback and close \n  \nSafety Concept \nYou need to bring proof of testing (not older than 24 hours)\, or proof of vaccination in order to be let inside. \nHand disinfectant provided in multiple places. All surfaces are disinfected and will be disinfected in between use. \nSpace is limited to give more space for everyone. \nWe frequently air the space and also use fans for more circulation. \nYou must wear a mask at all times. \n  \nWho is this event for? \nLGBTQIA+ describes the full spectrum of non-mainstream sexual orientation and/or gender identity\, meaning: lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, pansexual\, transgender\, non-binary\, genderqueer/fluid\, queer\, intersex\, asexual\, aromantic\, agender. \nWomên describes people who are identifying themselves as female in their gender identity. People that fit this category can be part of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum or not. We created this category specifically to indicate that we also invite cisgender\, heterosexual womên. \nThe word is our own creation and serves as a replacement for the word “womxn” which is now being (ab)used for transmisogynist statements. The ^ in womên represents a marker (similar to the “x” in womxn) that wishes to give emphasis to the fact that womênhood is an intersectional umbrella term that holds many different people and experiences and is not biologically predetermined. \n

The role of the facilitator is to offer the space and be the contact person in case of safety concerns. The facilitator is a participant\, not a teacher. The power of the facilitator is over the space and safety\, not over the knowledge shared. \n  \nAre you a newbie? \nWelcome to the hangout! You can attend at any time of your rope journey. We recommend sharing what you know with others even if you just began to tie. Teaching is the best way to learn! To get started with your rope skills\, take a look at our workshop schedule.\nWe recommend for you arrive at the beginning of the night. We have an introduction circle and go through the code of conduct and other important information. You will also see who else is there. If you can’t make it to the starting circle\, please contact us in advance.\nYou can always attend Rope Hangout alone and find new friends when you get there. If you feel socially awkward\, like many of us do\, bring someone you trust with you\, or send us a message in advance so we can prepare to give you extra support. \n  \nSafety Concept \n  \nYou need to bring proof of testing (not older than 24 hours)\, or proof of vaccination in order to be let inside. \nHand disinfectant provided in multiple places. All surfaces are disinfected and will be disinfected in between use. \nSpace is limited to give more space for everyone. \nWe frequently air the space and also use fans for more circulation. \nWe partially partition off spaces for tying for more safety/intimacy. \nYou must wear a mask at all times\, with the exception of you sitting in a dedicated tying spot with a partner/partners of your own household.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Articulation in Rope
DESCRIPTION:What is articulation? \nSomething you might be more familiar with than you think. In tying\, articulation involves where and how events and arcs begin and end. Articulation is involved in the difference taking an appropriate amount of time for every single action while tying\, but also making sure that tying doesn’t become boring\, homogenous\, and bland. “Articulation\,” although often in a different set of terms is what most teachers are thinking about when they tell their students to “slow down.” \nUnderstanding articulation is vital for anyone interested in tying. Although rarely discussed\, the ability to break down and analyze movement is one of the most fundamental skills of the practice. Articulation is an important component of any movement analysis. \nDrawing on physical theater exercises\, Andrea Rimon will help students explicitly identify points of articulation and refine their ability to break down scenes as well as to make intentional choices. This class will be a study on how to make each moment count. In addition to drawing on exercises and techniques from physical theater\, we will take a broad theoretical approach that touches on anatomy\, linguistics\, and semiotics to examine where concepts of articulation align. Taking all of these ideas together\, they will explore articulation as the nexus of content and expression\, an important and politically charged site of creativity production. \nIn other words\, they will help students identify\, grow familiar with\, and engage in play with something that is part and parcel of any good tying experience. \n  \nEvent Details \nDate & Time:  October 8\, 2021\, 7pm-10pm CET (Berlin time) \nFormat: workshop / demonstration \nAudience:  LGBTQIA+ & FRIENDS \nLanguage: English \nMinimum Knowledge Level: – \nWhat to bring: ropes and a partner if you wish to tie along \nSolo or partnered? Both is fine. If you wish to tie along\, you need a partner (everybody needs a ticket) \nClass recording: Yes. The session will be recorded and available for 14 days after the workshop. The participants will not be recorded. \n  \nWhat else to know \nAfter your successful ticket purchase\, you will be sent an email with the Zoom login data for this event. \nIf you cannot afford this event\, please check the ticket option “solidarity” for reduced ticket prices. SUMMARY:Change and Loss
DESCRIPTION:Dealing with change and loss – we all do it. All of the time.\nIn pandemic times we are confronted with a huge amount of change and loss on both personal levels and globally. \nMourning as a cultural skill or a community practice is often neglected or denied. Mourning is absolutely essential for our well being and our ability to adapt and transform when change and loss happen.\nMourning is super personal\, and yet it is something that can connect us when we dare to show a glimpse or a huge wave of it. Mourning needs witness. Mourning also needs movement so it can contract and expand and does not get stuck in our bodies. \nFor some of us\, just attending online events is so new and sometimes uncomfortable that it can bring out feelings of grief and and sorrow. \nLet us be aware of that when we meet online and make time for feelings of grief\, of sadness\, of loss and maybe of feeling abandoned.\nLet us be aware that holding each other and the feeling of being held and truly seen is difficult online.\nThis is why we will start with exercises that centre and ground and resource us.\nThese exercises are very simple breathing and body awareness techniques as well as working with images in our minds. \nThere will be some teaching about mourning and grief related to death\, break ups\, changes in our bodies\, trauma\, and ongoing oppression and injustice. \nAnd finally there will be a sharing circle that invites you to talk about your own experiences with mourning and loss. \n  \nEvent Details \nDate & Time:  October 6th\, 2021\, 7pm-9pm CET \nFormat: discussion (virtual) \nAudience:  LGBTQIA+ & FRIENDS \nLanguage: English\, translation into German can be provided \nMinimum Knowledge Level: – \nWhat to Bring:  nothing \nSolo or Partnered:  both (each participant needs a ticket) \nClass recording: no. \n  \nWhat else to know \nAfter your successful ticket purchase\, you will be sent an email with the Zoom login data for this event. \nIf you cannot afford this event\, please check the ticket option “solidarity” for reduced ticket prices. SUMMARY:Andrea Rimon & Georg Barkas: Closing Discussion
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe conference ends with a conversation about what occurred during the conference. Everyone is invited to speak. What did you\, the participants\, take home? How can we create space for queer embodiment in the future? This is the place to share and reflect. \n  \nThis session is part of the Queer Practices / Queer Embodiment remote transdisciplinary conference that aims to bring together artists\, theorists\, and practitioners. The conference continues our work of building a community that is focused on intentionally developing bodily practices. We want our space to be a place for political growth and experimentation using all the materials that bodywork\, sex education\, and cultural inquiry can provide. \nWe aim to take advantage of the opportunity for an online conference. SUMMARY:Jolene Jean Zubrow: Genealogy of Body Piercing // Luna Duran: The Work of Decolonization
DESCRIPTION:  \nGenealogy of Body Piercing \nJolene Jean Zubrow’s workshop will consist of a genealogy (in the spirit of Foucault) of contemporary body piercing practices in the United States of American and Western Europe from the 1960s through the present day. This project is undertaken as a case study\, in what is ultimately a remediation of philosophical conversations regarding subcultural practices and their fecundity as sources of subversion against unjust social arrangements and systems. Jo will argue that looking towards piercing is not best done for purposes of subversion or vindication\, but to reveal the problematizations upon which our practices always rely. Such an approach can be a more fertile ground for thinking about such practices in relation to social justice and ethical life.\n \n  \nThe Work of Decolonization \nThrough the critical lens of personal experience\, Luna Duran will introduce a general audience to the modern industry of body piercing. Brought into the United States through the private tattoo & piercing parties frequented by the gay leather community in California\, the practice of Body Piercing has grown into an industry that contends with\, often\, conflicting\nnarratives. Having spent over two decades of her life developing from an enthusiast to a professional in Body Art\, Luna has navigated a predominantly cis\, white\, male industry in the body of a queer native South American woman of color; providing her with a unique perspective which she documents on her skin through scarification and the consequences of enduring extreme ritual performances. She will share her mission of decodifying and deconditioning the assimilated scripts of white supremacy\, misogyny\, and heteronormativity inbuilt in our greater culture\, acquired by the Body Art industry. This is a call to arms for those who seek to experience the extreme act of self-ownership through body rituals as a path to liberation. SUMMARY:Richard Berkowitz: Inventing Safe Sex
DESCRIPTION:  \nToday\, to people not familiar with its history\, “safe sex” can sound anything but revolutionary. It can come across as tired and moralizing\, especially to those who grew up as conservative and “respectable” versions of safe-sex advocacy became relatively commonplace in some public institutions. At the heart of safe sex\, however\, is the story of a gay S&M hustler and a radical ethos of sexual autonomy and communal care. In this session\, Richard Berkowitz will discuss his all-too-often written-out role in the invention of safe sex. He will reflect on the political and historical context of safe sex’s creation and the change in its reception. Along the way\, participants will have a chance to discuss the legacies of gay liberation\, political shifts in gay advocacy\, the gentrification of the gay rights movement\, and the lessons that can be learned from all three.\n \n  \n \n  \nThis session is part of the Queer Practices / Queer Embodiment remote transdisciplinary conference that aims to bring together artists\, theorists\, and practitioners. The conference continues our work of building a community that is focused on intentionally developing bodily practices. SUMMARY:João Florêncio: Antiretroviral Time
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe introduction of combination antiretroviral therapies in 1996 brought about a radical change in the temporality of HIV infection\, moving us away from the event-time of the AIDS crisis to the expanded/expansive temporality of chronic ‘undetectability’. That\, and the later extension of antiretrovirals as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis\, has dramatically shifted the lived temporalities of both sex and subjectivity among gay men who were able to access the new medical protocols for testing\, managing\, and preventing HIV. In this lecture\, I draw from fieldwork carried out in Berlin\, Los Angeles\, and San Francisco\, and analysis of gay pornography\, to map the new temporalities of sex and subjectivity that have been catalysed by the introduction of antiretroviral drugs\, speculating on their limits and queer political potential\, situated as they are at the intersection of neoliberal regimes of biomedical self-administration and sex understood as both an aesthetics and poetics of existence. If modernity developed through an incessant rationalisation of time\, including of lived\, embodied time\, I argue that antiretroviral time has triggered the emergence of sexual behaviours and subjectivities that open up new avenues for thinking 21st-century triangulations of sex\, subjectivity\, and resistance being experimented with in bedrooms\, sex clubs\, and bathhouses across the developed world.\n \n  \nThis session is part of the Queer Practices / Queer Embodiment remote transdisciplinary conference that aims to bring together artists\, theorists\, and practitioners. SUMMARY:Jules Joanne Gleeson: Sadomasochism & Sex Reassignation
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis talk will explore the second half of the previously published essay ‘How Do Gender Transitions Happen?’\, exploring in some more depth the role played by S&M practices in the ‘community face’ of transition. \nClearly\, sadomasochism has been one means used by trans people (among other queers) to ‘recontextualise’ and refashion otherwise seemingly immutable body parts. What can be taken from this longstanding approach to embodiment? Is this simply one face of S&M’s utility in exploring bodily limits? And how can we make sense of these scenes’ oscillation between wholehearted affirmation and subversive undermining of sex position? \nI’ll draw from both existing academic work and more informal personal reflections from the 1980s and 90s. This approach aims to draw out both the distance and familiarity to current contexts and controversies. \nThis talk will outline both the particular overlap between S&M and transition\, and tease towards obvious commonalities between deviant experiences (already latent in these accounts being largely extracted from collections that are predominantly cis gays and lesbians.) S&M will be found as prone to forming as disrupting otherwise sturdy-seeming foundations. We seek to engage a broader audience that may be familiar with sex-positive culture but is not necessarily attuned to a wider set of political concerns\, or approaches to gender and sexuality that are more often encountered within academic\, activist\, and artistic spaces. We want to put together a conference that will be open to the public and focus on fostering challenging yet accessible conversation. \nQueer Practices / Queer Embodiment is curated and organized by a collaborative team consisting of Andrea Rimon (an intimacy choreographer and movement artist) and Georg Barkas (a tying and sexuality educator) and Karada House in Berlin (a queer art/research space). It is sponsored by Karada House and Github for Good. \nYou can browse the full program and get access to this session/the conference here \n  \nEvent Details \nDate & Time:  October 1st\, 2021\, 7 pm – 9 pm CET (Berlin time) \nFormat: transdisciplinary conference \nAudience:  LGBTQIA+ & FRIENDS \nLanguage: English\, automated closed captions provided \nRecording: yes\, will be available for 30 days to the participants of the conference \n  \nWhat else to know \nAfter your successful ticket purchase\, you will be sent an email with all the necessary data for this event. \nThis event is free. SUMMARY:Deviations Book Club: Queer Phenomenology
DESCRIPTION:  \nDeviations Book Club returns from its summer hiatus with a discussion of Sara Ahmed’s Queer Phenomenology\, a lyrical academic study of the phenomenological concept of “orientation.” The panel will discuss the book’s framing of queerness\, its approach to phenomenology\, and the thought that goes into planning a “queer” conference that faces a diverse and varied audience. SUMMARY:Semenawa/Kink Play/Predicament/Supporture Fun\, Kanna Style! Weekend Intensive
DESCRIPTION:  \nFor Nawashi Kanna aesthetics and patterns are what comes after deeply connecting to your partner and giving them sweet consensual torment\, delicious suffering and sweet relief. In Kanna’s school of rope / Kanna-ryu every rope\, every placement\, every tension and action should have an intention that the person tying is controlling. \nIn this weekend intensive workshop\, you will learn rope for playing and interacting with your partner in the modes of seme (“torture” rope)\, predicamtent\, rope for kink play and “supporture” (seme rope with extra care to make it supportive for all bodies and abilities). Kanna and Kagura will show you how to tie and control your sessions in multi-faceted ways depending on your intention. They will also teach you techniques\, tricks\, and ways of thinking about tormenting your partner by managing the placement\, lines\, tension \, timing\, direction\, distribution of the weight\, gravity\, body structure and limitations. \nThis workshop supports and encourages your understanding of the structure of the body and your partner’s abilities\, states and preferences\, reading the tension and your partner’s face and body language\, predicting what will happen with your ropes and your partner’s physical feelings in them\, as well as putting your own preferences into efficient and meaningful ties. \n  \n  \nIn Kanna & Kagura’s own words: \nWhether it’s the first time to meet you\, or it’s been a while\, or you’ve met us online but never in person\, no matter what level you are\, we really couldn’t wait to enjoy the ropes in the same space with you all! We’ve always been hoping to be committed to providing safe\, respectful\, equitable\, and enjoyable learning environments for queer or gender diverse students while supporting their development and interaction with their partner. So we are super excited to share these with you! \nIf you’ve taken a workshop in the past or an online class\, you’ve learned the basics and you are probably familiar with Kanna-ryu! Some of the content may overlap\, but this series would be instructive for upgrading your skills or polishing off your knowledge!! In-person workshop classes\, we’re offering skills development training workshops [*not professional teacher training workshop]\, with direct instruction such as checking\, correcting\, and suggesting to each person. \nOur education plan puts students focusing on lifelong learning (the long-term benefits for sustainable rope activities) first\, along with exploring a variety of approaches and methods or diverse possibilities\, while prioritizing developing step-by-step skills\, creativity\, knowledge\, and experience\, rather than pushing new patterns practice as many as possible. \nThe content and instruction of the class will be tailored on a case-by-case basis\, based on the level of the class\, the student’s progress and speed\, reflecting the student’s interests and demands\, and/or the partner’s fatigue\, as well as what is needed and what is good to know. In multi-level classes\, the class may have a division in the middle sometimes flexibly depending on the student’s choice: skill practice\, reteach or mini-lesson\, and play with partners. \nPlease don’t compare yourself to other students. There are no rankings\, no comparisons\, or competition between students or schools in Shibari and workshops. Shibari is available for every body of all ages\, genders\, and abilities. Differences that vary from person to person could be valued as individual characteristics\, and grow creativity with special needs. Our doing rope activities Shibari or Kinbaku is interpersonal communication even in group learning. Focus on yourself\, your partner\, your interests\, and your goals! \n  \nEvent Details \nDate & Time:  September 25th & 26th\, 2021\, 10 am – 6 pm (lunch break included) \nFormat: hands-on workshop\n \nAudience: LGBTQIA+ & WOMÊN \nLanguage: Japanese\, English live translations by Kako \nMinimum Knowledge Level: you must be familiar with and able to solidly tie single & double column ties\, box tie\, and have knowledge of all common frictions \nWhat to Bring:  a full set of ropes (8-10 ropes)\, safety equipment\, a partner who consents to this kind of play\, solid negotiation skills\, a sadistic-mind to enjoy watching the partner’s suffering reaction or a masochistic mind that enjoys to suffer and be watched \nSolo or Partnered:  the ticket price is per PAIR \nPrice: 450€/pair \n  \nWho is this event for? \nIf you are not part of the LGBTQIA+ you are not eligible to purchase a ticket. \nIf you consider yourself a Friend\, you may put yourself on the waiting list for any leftover spaces. If you wish to do so\, please email us at info@karada-house.de with your rope name\, profile (FL\, insta etc.) if you have one and intention as to why you would like to participate. \nFriends describes people of any and all kinds of gender and sexual identities who are aware and respectful of the necessity\, needs\, and boundaries of a queer safe(r) space and its marginalized community. \nWhen you consider yourself a friend you show acknowledgment to and are respectful of everyone’s self-expression and do not assume\, presume or project non-consensual ideas onto others. You actively request and use people’s chosen pronouns. You remain mindful of the fact that Karada House is first and foremost a space for queer people that you are also invited to attend. You have a genuine concern for the well-being of LGBTQIA+ people and remain in awareness of heterosexual and gender straight privileges. \nFriends don’t have to be perfect. None of us are. We request that we all pro-actively work and strive to be good friends and allies to marginalized people. \n  \nPayment Plans \nWe offer the possibility to pay in instalments for this weekend intensive. If you are interested in a payment plan\, please fill out this form. We will get back to you asap. \n  \nScholarship \nWe are offering one scholarship (100% reduction of the workshop fee) to one pair of rope practitioners.
